Part Load Removals to India: Ship a Small Move from the UK

Part load removals to India let you ship a smaller household (a few rooms, boxes and some furniture) in a shared container, paying only for the space your goods take up. At The Indian Mover, it's the option we recommend most often for small removals to India: NRI families and professionals moving with less than a full house.

Most people returning to India from London are sending a chosen selection rather than a whole house: heirloom furniture, books, artwork, kitchen equipment and personal effects. This guide covers how part load works, timings, what you can send, the paperwork and when a full container makes more sense.

What is a part load removal to India?

A part load removal to India means your belongings travel in a shared shipping container with other households' goods, and you pay only for the volume yours occupy. It's also called groupage or LCL (less than container load). It suits moves of roughly 70 to 600 cubic feet (cu ft): the contents of a studio, a one-bed or a two-bed flat.

A sole-use container is the alternative. A 20ft container holds roughly 1,000 to 1,100 cu ft of packed household goods. If you're shipping 280 cu ft, a whole container means paying for space you don't use. Groupage removes that waste.

How consolidation works

  1. Our crew packs and inventories your goods at your UK home.
  2. Your consignment is held separately in a consolidation warehouse until the container for your port is ready.
  3. The container sails from a UK port such as Felixstowe, Southampton or London Gateway.
  4. At Nhava Sheva (Mumbai), Chennai, Mundra or Kolkata, your goods are separated, cleared against your own paperwork and delivered.

Is part load cheaper than a full container?

For most moves under about 600 cu ft, yes. Part load is usually the most affordable way to ship furniture and boxes from the UK to India, because you pay for the space you use rather than the whole container. Above roughly 630 to 700 cu ft, a sole-use 20ft container usually costs less per cubic foot and arrives faster.

This table shows how volume relates to what people typically send.

Part load removals to India: volume guide
Volume Typical contents Usually suits
70–140 cu ft Boxes of personal effects, books, clothes, kitchenware. No furniture Single professional, student returning home
175–280 cu ft One-bed flat: bed, sofa, dining set, boxed effects Couple, first international move
320–500 cu ft Two-bed flat: bedroom, lounge, dining, some appliances Small family
530–700 cu ft Three-bed house, selected items only Family shipping part, leaving or selling the rest
Over 700 cu ft Most of a three or four-bed house Sole-use container recommended

Costs people forget to budget for

Ask any mover whether their quote is door-to-door or port-to-port. Charges that catch people out include:

  • Indian terminal handling, devanning and customs examination fees
  • Inland transport from the port to your home
  • Long-carry charges, parking suspensions or shuttle vehicles at your UK property

Our quotes are door-to-door and include Indian customs clearance handling. Duty and taxes assessed by Indian customs remain the client's responsibility.

How is a part load shipment measured and priced?

Part load is priced by volume in cubic feet (cu ft), based on a home or video survey of what you plan to send. The price also depends on your destination port and how far inland your new home is, the packing service you choose, and any extras such as storage or unpacking. After the survey you get a fixed price for the agreed inventory.

That price is revised only if you add items after the survey. The surveyor will recommend part load, a full container or a mix, whichever suits your move.

How long does part load take to reach India?

Door-to-door, a part load removal to India typically takes 8 to 12 weeks. The sea crossing itself is only part of that. The rest is waiting for the shared container to fill in the UK, unpacking and separating at the Indian port, and customs clearance. A full container is quicker because it skips both consolidation stages.

Part load removals to India: typical timeline, stage by stage
Stage What happens Typical duration
Survey and quote Home or video survey, volume assessed, fixed price issued 2–5 days
Packing and collection Export packing, itemised inventory, loading 1–2 days
Consolidation Goods held until the shared container is ready 1–3 weeks
Export clearance and sailing Container sealed, loaded, vessel departs 3–7 days
Sea crossing UK port to Indian port via the Suez Canal 4–5 weeks
Unpacking and customs Consignment separated, customs assessed 7–14 days
Delivery Road transport to your home, unloading 2–7 days

What causes delays, and how to avoid them

  • Late booking. A flexible collection window lets us match your goods to a container close to sailing.
  • Vague paperwork. "Miscellaneous household" on an inventory invites a physical customs examination.
  • Missing documents. A short-dated passport or missing proof of residence can hold goods at the port. We prepare the paperwork before sailing.

Can I send a sofa, bed or dining set from the UK to India?

Yes. Furniture such as sofas, beds, wardrobes and dining sets can go in a part load shipment to India, and furniture removals from the UK to India are one of the main reasons families choose groupage. Each piece is measured at survey, export-wrapped and listed on your inventory. Large or delicate pieces may need extra protection, and sometimes crating.

Flat-pack furniture often costs more to ship than to replace. Solid-wood pieces and heirlooms are usually worth sending.

Are there restrictions on shipping wooden furniture to India?

Used wooden household furniture can generally be shipped to India as part of your personal effects. The rules that catch people out usually concern the wooden packaging rather than the furniture: timber crates and pallets used in international shipping must meet the ISPM 15 standard for treated wood. We use compliant crating.

What documents do I need, and does Transfer of Residence apply?

A small shipment can still qualify for Transfer of Residence (TR), the Indian customs concession that allows eligible people relocating to India to import used household goods with duty relief. Volume doesn't change eligibility. Your residence history abroad does. Our Transfer of Residence guide explains the qualifying rules and the most common mistakes.

You'll typically need:

  • Your original passport, with copies of the pages showing your travel history for the qualifying period
  • A detailed packing list in English, itemised by carton, with makes, models and serial numbers for electrical items
  • The original bill of lading or sea waybill issued at origin
  • Completed customs declarations, including the TR declaration where it applies
  • Proof of residence in India, such as a lease, employment letter or property documents
  • Your OCI card, if you hold one

Items that attract duty or are restricted

  • New goods still boxed with tags are treated as commercial imports and attract full duty.
  • Alcohol is subject to strict quantity limits and duty.
  • Gold and jewellery above personal allowances must be declared. We advise carrying jewellery with you rather than shipping it.
  • Firearms, drones, satellite phones and certain wildlife products are prohibited or heavily restricted.

Rules are set by India's Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and can change, so we confirm them for every shipment. Diplomatic households follow a separate process through The Diplomatic Mover.

When is a full container the better choice?

Choose part load when you're sending under about 530 cu ft, cost matters more than speed, and you can accept a delivery window rather than a fixed date. Choose a sole-use container when you're sending more than about 700 cu ft, your arrival date is fixed (a school term, for example), or you're shipping fine art or antiques that are better handled as little as possible.

Part load vs sole-use container for removals to India
Comparison Part load (groupage) Sole-use container
Cost basis Per cubic foot used Flat rate for the container
Usually economical Under ~530–630 cu ft Over ~700 cu ft
Door-to-door timing 8–12 weeks 6–8 weeks
Handling Extra handling at consolidation and unpacking Sealed in the UK, opened at destination
Date certainty A window, depending on when the container fills Fixed to the vessel schedule
Fine art and antiques Case by case, with crating Preferred
Customs clearance Individual, can queue behind others Individual and independent

An illustrative example

A two-bed flat in Kensington moving to Bengaluru sends about 425 cu ft: a bedroom suite, a dining set, two sofas, 70 cartons and four framed prints. The family has serviced accommodation for eight weeks, so part load is the right call.

Add a school term starting six weeks after departure and the advice changes: a sole-use container, or part load plus a small air freight shipment of essentials.

What does our part load service include?

Every part load move with The Indian Mover includes a free survey, export packing by our crew, a full itemised inventory, UK export documentation, sea freight, Indian customs clearance, delivery and unloading. A personal move manager is assigned when you book and stays your single point of contact until the last carton is unpacked.

Export packing for a long sea crossing

Weeks at sea mean humidity, temperature changes and vibration. We use double-walled export cartons, moisture-barrier wrapping for upholstery, edge protection for furniture, and crates for mirrors, glass, marble and artwork.

One person who owns your move

Your move manager in London handles your survey, documentation, packing brief and shipment tracking, liaises with our partners in India and calls you with updates. You'll have their direct line.

Insurance

Transit insurance is available as an option, at the declared value of your goods. We help you complete a valued inventory and explain the terms before you sign. Without it, a carrier's standard liability is very limited for household goods.

The Indian Mover is part of The Mover Group, which holds IAM Premier Membership, the highest tier of the International Association of Movers.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the minimum volume for part load removals to India?

We usually accept part load consignments from about 50 cu ft, around 25 to 30 export cartons . Below that, air freight or a baggage service is often better value, and we'll tell you so. Above about 630 to 700 cu ft, a sole-use container is usually cheaper and faster.

  • How long do part load removals to India take?

Door-to-door, part load removals to India typically take 8 to 12 weeks . The sea crossing takes about four to five weeks. The rest is consolidation in the UK, unpacking and separation at the Indian port, customs clearance and delivery to your home.

  • Can I send a sofa or bed in a part load shipment to India?

Yes. Sofas, beds, wardrobes and dining sets can all travel by part load. Each piece is measured at survey, export-wrapped and listed on your inventory. Compare the cost of shipping large items with the cost of replacing them in India before deciding.

  • Does Transfer of Residence apply to a small shipment?

Yes. Transfer of Residence depends on your residence history abroad, not the size of your shipment, so a part load can qualify for duty relief on used household goods. Our Transfer of Residence guide explains the eligibility rules and documents.

  • Which Indian cities do you deliver to?

We deliver door-to-door to major cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad, and to smaller towns by road from the nearest port. Remote locations may need a smaller vehicle, priced at survey.

  • Is customs clearance included?

Yes. Indian customs clearance handling is included in the part load relocations we manage, along with UK export documentation. Any duty or taxes that Indian customs assesses are payable by the client, which is true whichever removals company you use.
